We don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see this is a dog struggling with the situation it is. We have the dog looking uncomfortably held on the floor, wide mouth, worried expression.
It can not create the space it might need to feel able to cope, there is the boy holding it down, one stood to the side and of course someone taking a picture. Nowhere to go, and in these moments the dog’s instinctive survival instinct can very firmly be placed in fight or flight.
These posts are not just about protecting dogs, they are centred around teaching the dog owners of the future. By teaching children to respect a dog’s boundaries and personal space, we prevent very avoidable accidents.
Remember that children often create these high-pressure situations without realising it. Before blaming the dog, look at the environment we as adults allowed to be created.
Teach respect. Understand the signs. Be their voice.
